Staying Active in a Wheelchair: Celebrate Movement

At VivaViv we believe in recognising the independence, resilience and strength of wheelchair users. Movement is for everyone, and staying active, no matter your mobility level, has incredible benefits for both physical and mental well-being.

At VivaViv, we believe that movement should be accessible to all. Whether you’re a wheelchair user yourself or a carer assisting someone, here are some simple wheelchair-friendly exercises to encourage strength, flexibility, and circulation.

Warm-up

Before starting, take a moment to warm up your muscles:

  • Lift your arms as high as possible into the air.
  • Then, try to reach down and touch your toes (or as close as you can).
  • This helps loosen up the body and prepare for movement.
  1. Seated Shoulder Rolls
  • Sit up straight and roll your shoulders forward in slow circles, then backward.
  • This eases tension, improves posture, and helps with circulation.
  1. Arm Raises & Shoulder Presses
  • Lift both arms straight up, then bring them back down.
  • Hold light weights (or water bottles) and press them overhead for extra strength training.
  1. Seated Twists
  • Keep your back straight and twist your upper body slowly from side to side.
  • This helps with core engagement and spinal flexibility.
  1. Resistance Band Exercises
  • Use a resistance band to strengthen arms, chest, and back by pulling it apart or stretching it forward and back.
  • Great for building muscle and improving endurance.
  1. Leg Lifts (for Partial Mobility)
  • If possible, lift one leg at a time and hold for a few seconds.
  • This strengthens leg muscles and improves circulation.
  1. Leg Circles (for Partial Mobility)
  • Hold on to both sides of your wheelchair and lift both legs up together towards your chest, then make a circle and try to do a few.
  • This strengthens the core muscles as well as the inner thighs.
  1. Wheelchair Pushes & Outdoor Strolls
  • Moving yourself (if able) or being pushed around the block for fresh air is a great way to stay active.
  • Sunshine and fresh air boost mood and overall well-being.
